Objective of the program
To recover cultural assets of material nature and to preserve the cultural heritage of the communities of Novo Bento Rodrigues, Paracatu and Gesteira, affected by the collapse.
- Support for the “Cultural Night” in the Paracatu resettlement.
The action, in partnership with UNESCO, is part of the Cultural References Reparation Plan through the Opening Spaces Program and aims to carry out the cultural transition to the new resettlement through leisure and social activities to maintain community ties.
- Completion of the temporary roofing of the restoration work on the Chapel of N. Sra das Mercês. The action is part of the scope of the Restoration of Integrated Real Estate Assets project. It is required to restore the roof, which protects the chapel during the rainy season.
- Support the celebration of the triduum and the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy in the Bento Rodrigues resettlement. The action is part of the Cultural References Reparation Plan and contributes to ensuring cultural practices and maintaining community ties. The action aims to ensure the promotion and strengthening of the religious practice of the Bento Rodrigues community and the transition to resettlement.
- 1st Football Championship of the Campinas community.
The action is part of the set of sports and leisure activities of the Cultural References Reparation Plan and aims to act in the process of maintaining community ties and valuing the local football teams.
- Start of emergency activities in the Raimundo Augusto Martins Filho inventoried building.
The action is part of the scope of the Real Estate Restoration project. Emergency shoring is necessary both to preserve the building and to ensure people's safety.

"Completion of the 1st stage of the Cultural References Reparation Plan – Year 2022. The activities took place through planning carried out in cooperation between the Renova Foundation, UNESCO, public bodies and various suppliers. Several actions of the reparation plan were carried out, contained in 8 different pillars. We can highlight:

This action is part of the Plan for the disposal of parts from the Technical Reserve, advancing towards the conclusion of clause 96.
Start of emergency interventions at the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in the district of Gesteira, municipality of Barra Longa, with a view to containing damage to the structure caused by the torrential rains of January 2022. Important action to safeguard the affected heritage to ensure its integrity until complete restoration.
Closing of registration for the second edition of the Doce RFP

UNESCO partnership with the hiring of a Cultural Project Coordinator to develop a participatory methodology that reconciles the preservation and diffusion of cultural expressions recognized by the communities affected by the Fundao dam collapse in the municipalities of Mariana, Barra Longa, Santa Cruz do Escalvado and Rio Doce. In doing so, it will accompany the management and monitoring of cultural projects to be developed by various institutions contracted by the Renova Foundation, in order to collaborate in proposing strategies that promote communication and dialogue regarding the planned interventions, contacting the diverse group of stakeholders and local authorities, in addition to being responsible for the technical coordination of the implementation and monitoring of field activities.

• On 08/30/19, restoration procedures were performed on six pieces in the Mariana Technical Reserve, associated with the Chapels of Our Lady of Mercy, Our Lady of Conception, St. Benedict and St. Anthony.
Project for Restoration/Requalification of Damaged Chapels:
• On 07/29/19, the restoration projects were reviewed by the technical advisory body contracted by the Archdiocese of Mariana. They involve the completed restoration projects of movable property, restoration projects of the four damaged chapels and the projects of the chapels in the resettlements.
Process of material assets:
• On 07/31/19, 5 pieces in the Mariana Technical Reserve, originating from the Chapels of Our Lady of Mercy, Our Lady of Conception and St. Anthony, underwent restoration procedures.
• On 01/07/19, the restoration of Hotel Xavier in Barra Longa began, as part of the real estate restoration project.
Project for Restoration/Requalification of Damaged Chapels:
• The revision of the restoration projects by the technical assistance contracted by the Archdiocese of Mariana was not initiated for the already completed restoration projects of movable property, restoration projects of the four affected chapels and the resettlement chapel projects. The delay is due to the lack of availability in the agenda of the Archdiocese of Mariana to define the work plan.
Diagnosis of Cultural References Project and Safeguarding Plan:
• On 06/18/2019, the identification stage of the Diagnosis of Cultural References was completed.
• The identification phase of the Diagnosis of Cultural References, foreseen for the community of Gesteira, did not take place. The negative atmosphere made it impossible to discuss with the community and to carry out the planned workshops.
Process of material assets:
• On 06/28/19, the following artifacts underwent restauration in the Mariana Technical Reserve (belonging to the chapel of Our Lady of Mercy): images of Saint Joseph, Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady of Nazareth, Saint Anthony.
Project for Restoration/Requalification of Damaged Chapels:
• On 05/31/19, technical advisor was hired for the Archdiocese of Mariana to validate the already completed restoration projects of movable property, restoration projects of the four damaged chapels and the projects of the chapels in the resettlements.
Diagnosis of Cultural References Project and Safeguard Plan:

In July, infrastructure was made available for the celebration of the Feast of Saint Benedict in Bento Rodrigues. The festival is a unique moment in the community, celebrating its patron, and it also provides the opportunity to shape the ritual and affirmation of the memory of those affected and their connection to the area of origin.
The program held a meeting to start the work contracted by the company Estilo Nacional, which will carry out a diagnosis of the cultural references of the affected communities in Mariana, Barra Longa, Santa Cruz and Rio Doce.
The Program was approved by the Interfederative Committee.
The company Cantaria was contracted to conduct the patrimonial education and restoration in the Technical Reserve. The company Lume was contracted to perform monitoring, diagnosis and draft an action plan for archaeological assets.
UNESCO representatives have been to the location, addressing technical cooperation issues in the area of cultural heritage. This activity is a solution to increase the Mariana community’s adhesion to the diagnosis of immaterial assets.
In Barra Longa, restoration projects have begun, in partnership with the Program 10, in which the main church of São José, the Antônio Trindade residence, João de Freitas, José Lanna and Xavier hotels participate.
Technical support for architectural restoration (Floresta Farm and Casa Jardim) and archeology (Environmental Licensing and Resettlement) for other Foundation programs was also provided.
The Chapels of Merces and Santo Antonio were also weeded and cleaned.
The companies Gema Architecture and Engebio were mobilized to carry out the projects to restore the properties that collapsed or inventories in Barra Longa. The objective of the activity is to mitigate the impacts caused by the increase of traffic of vehicles and equipment used in the removal of tailings.
During this month, the EPIC/RIPC of the Bento Rodrigues Resettlement was also reviewed.
The activities began to obtain altars for the new churches for the resettlements, as well as the mobilization of priests and communities of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo.
Priests and residents of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo were also involved in the definition of the guidelines for the development of projects for the new chapels and altars of the new churches. The work plan for restoration of the Casa Jardim ruins in Mariana is also being discussed.
Anoxic chambers were also installed to eliminate any contamination of fungi and bacteria on sacred pieces stored in the Technical Reserve. Using this technique, the sacred items are placed in plastic bubbles from which the oxygen is withdrawn, and nitrogen is introduced.
In response to a request by the Bento Rodrigues community (MG), the Renova Foundation installed a mobile floor in the remnant of the Sao Bento Chapel, so that the site can be used during religious ceremonies. This month, the projects to recover the Sao Jose de Botas Main Church and the Xavier Hotel in Barra Longa also started.
The guidelines for the approval of the restauration of real estate, mobile and integrated assets were agreed with the Archdiocese of Mariana and with the State Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage of Minas Gerais (IEPHA/MG). To the Prosecution Service of Minas Gerais (MPMG) was presented with a dossier containing all the works carried out in the area of Cultural Heritage (material and archaeological).
The Technical Reserve was visited by representatives of the UN Environment Program. They were presented with the methodologies adopted by the program and actions on the agenda to be worked on together with the communities. In March, the space was provided with anoxic cameras (cameras without oxygen) for the treatment and preservation of items that include wood, cloth and paper.
Regarding the safeguard actions, a meeting was held with the Folia de Reis de Paracatu (Three Kings Parade) to identify the demands of the group, as well as the definition of actions to promote, enhance and maintain this form of cultural expression. Members of the parade also visited the Music Museum, where they participated in a singing lesson and decided meet again in April in Aguas Claras (MG).
During the inauguration of the music project for the affected communities, the Music Museum received the members of the community of Paracatu de Baixo (MG), who got to know the place and attended a concert. The community of Gesteira also went to the museum, where they attended a presentation by Professor Vitor Gomes and received an explanation about the weekly classes for the community.
The Foundation assisted in the celebration of the Holy Week of Bento Rodrigues with materials. It provided a generator, potable water, filling the water tank of the Church of the Mercies, chemical toilets, cleaning of the roads and installation of a tent and floor at the ruins of the Sao Bento Church.
The renovation has begun on the property that will house the Casa dos Saberes (Knowledge Center), in Mariana (MG).
Also carried out was the survey and evaluation of the demands of the Barralonguense soccer team to continue the training of the teams.
With the objective of preparing educational music activities in the Mariana Music Museum, a meeting was held at the Museum to plan activities to take place in March.
The State Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (IEPHA) was given responsibility by the Archdiocese of Mariana, in Minas Gerais, for the technical approval of the restoration projects of the old chapels.
In January, maintenance was performed on the old chapels inspecting the siding. A provisional tent was installed in the Chapel of Sao Bento, replacing the previous one, damaged due to the intense winds in the region.
The Renova Foundation is conducting the competitive process to define the companies that will continue the work focused on the intangible and archaeological heritage in the Technical Reserve.
The projects for the restoration and renovation of the Chapels of Nossa Senhora das Merces (Bento Rodrigues), Santo Antonio (Paracatu de Baixo) and Nossa Senhora da Conceicao (Gesteira), in Minas Gerais, were finalized. The pieces belonging to the collection of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao were placed in the Parish House of Barra Longa (MG). Also transferred to the Technical Reserve were 17 pieces belonging to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao and 116 pieces belonging to the Chapels of Nossa Senhora das Merces and Sao Bento, both of Bento Rodrigues and the Santo Antonio Chapel.
The archeology and conservation team removed the tailings that were concentrated below the beds of the Sao Bento Chapel. This work resulted in two reports: one on all procedures adopted and the results achieved by archaeologists; another report on the work done by the team of restorers/conservators who cleaned all wooden pieces. There was also the finalization of the project of restoration and conservation of the remnants.
In the Technical Reserve all pieces of the collection were disinfected, except for larger structural pieces. 267 files were made for identification and treatment, of which 118 related to the Chapel of St. Benedict (Sao Bento), 60 to the Chapel of St. Anthony (Santo Antonio) and 89 to the Chapel of Our Lady of Conception.
The sacred pieces of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Conception (Gesteira) were stored in the Parish House in Barra Longa. The teams of restaurateurs/conservators, together with Renova's security team and the Military Police, brought the pieces to the Technical Reserve and performed the first conservation procedures.
In November, the Technical Reserve received several visitors, including representatives of the press, foundations, companies and various institutes. There were 42 visitors from affected communities.
Continuity of actions related to the search for sacred and remnant pieces of the São Bento Chapel and the training of more than 108 additional workers and residents of the region. In the Technical Reserve, 91 pieces, predominantly part of the altarpiece and the balustrade of the Chapel of Our Lady of Conceicao, in Gesteira, were thoroughly cleaned. A total of 53 records were produced, identifying the pieces and indicating their treatment, of which 41 originate from Paracatu and 12 from Bento Rodrigues.
The search for sacred and remnant pieces of the São Bento Chapel, in Bento Rodrigues (MG), continue. Over 70 workers and residents of the region were trained and a tent was set up to cover the ruins of Sao Bento.
In the Technical Reserve, the emergency recovery work on 49 sacred pieces belonging to the communities here mentioned was carried out, plus the processing of all material (labels, packaging, listing, organization). The professionals involved in the restoration process were visited by residents of Bento Rodrigues and Gesteira, who contributed to the identification of the pieces and were informed about the actions taken.
In the second meeting of the Technical Reference Group, the topic discussed was Intangible Heritage. The Renova Foundation presented the actions carried out and in progress, as well as the those scheduled, to the Prosecution Service of Minas Gerais and the Federal Prosecution Service, to the residents of Bento Rodrigues, Gesteira, Paracatu de Baixo, Ponte do Gama, in Minas Gerais, and to the technical advisory body Caritas. At the end of this meeting, the participants, mainly the affected parties and the advisory body, prepared a questionnaire with questions for the Renova Foundation to answer.
In historical Bento Rodrigues (MG), a protective tent was set up covering the ruins of the São Bento Chapel. Also, still continuing are the search for remaining sacred pieces of the Chapel and the dialogue with the 80 workers and residents of the region, who are helping in the process.
In the Technical Reserve, 216 sacred pieces related to the affected communities received emergency repair. The professionals involved in the restoration process were visited by the residents of the towns of Bento Rodrigues and Gesteira, in Minas Gerais, who contributed to the identification of the pieces.
The activities carried out were presented to the Technical Board, which gave approval for the next actions, the technical bases and the Term of Reference for Intangible Heritage of the Program for the Preservation of Historical, Cultural and Artistic Memory.

Participating were representatives of the affected communities, the Minas Gerais Prosecution Service (MPMG), municipal secretaries, the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN), the State Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage of Minas Gerais (IEPHA-MG), the Municipal Board of Cultural Heritage of Mariana (Compat), the State Department of Environment and Sustainable Development (Semad) and the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama).

Archeology develops the uninterrupted monitoring of churches, twice a day, in order to value the integrity of goods, observing the state of conservation and the maintenance of protection structures. The same team performs explorations in the impacted areas, within Territory 1, for the location of possible fragments/pieces of sacred patrimony;

In the Technical Reserve, the emergency recovery work on 58 sacred pieces belonging to impacted communities was carried out. The restorers were visited by several residents of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu, who contributed to the identification of the pieces and were informed about the actions taken.
The formation of the Technical Reference Group is in progress with the purpose of establishing priority actions and definition of the actions that should be carried out regarding the patrimonial cultural assets.
Nine pieces were recovered, of which seven were found by the team of this program and two by people from the communities of Ponte do Gama and Barra Longa (MG).
Eighty people from outsourced companies and the community have been trained in restoration so that they are able to recognize parts that need to be collected and handed over to the team.
On May 31, the “Immaculate Heart of Mary” ceremony was held at the Casa dos Saberes, in Mariana (MG). The event was organized by the communities of Bento and Paracatu, with the support of the Renova Foundation.
In April, 14 pieces were recovered, all in Bento Rodrigues, in Mariana (MG). Furthermore, 25 training sessions were held for different audiences, such as third-party organizations, Samarco and the community. These trainings are designed so that people who live, work, travel or study in the areas near the mud pass are able to recognize pieces that need to be collected and handed over to the program staff.
On April 11, an archaeological workshop was held in Mariana at the Bento Rodrigues Municipal School, which was attended by teachers and students from the 4th and 5th grades.
In March, 24 pieces were saved, six in Mariana (MG) and 18 in Gesteira (MG). Furthermore, 70 training sessions were held for different audiences, such as contractors, Samarco and the community. In addition, the communities of Paracatu, Bento Rodrigues and Gesteira in Minas Gerais, participated in meetings on intangible assets, involving culture and knowledge. In Gesteira, topics that were discussed included traditional medicine, embroidery, cooking and crafts from bamboo and wood. In Paracatu and Bento Rodrigues, the discussion was about the possibility of using of the Casa dos Saberes (House of Knowledge) in Mariana (MG).
The preparation phase of the architecture project for the restoration of the chapels Santo Antônio in Paracatu (Mariana) and Nossa Senhora Conceição in Gesteira (Barra Longa) was completed. In March, the inventory of properties was started and the screening of the collection concluded, including pieces of the Arquidiocesano Museum, belonging to the Nossa Senhora das Merces church in Bento Rodrigues.
A dynamic workshop was held, called "Green Line", to which 28 students of Paracatu de Baixo participated at the Municipal School Paracatu de Baixo in Mariana, on March 24.
In the technical reserve, guided tours were set up.
Regarding the artistic and integrated assets of temples and technical reserves, the identification and diagnosis has been completed for the projects of the chapels of Paracatu and Gesteira, as well as the inventory of integrated assets and historical research. Regarding the monitoring work of the temples, prospecting, curatorship and heritage education, 29 sacred pieces were saved and 46 technical trainings were held for various groups.
Regarding the artistic and integrated assets of the temples and technical reserves, work has begun on the collection of data of the archive and the first screening, as well as the reorganization and wrapping of pieces of the technical reserve. Also ongoing are the on-site emergency works in the chapels of Gesteira and Paracatu (MG) and to the pieces that are in Germano (MG). Regarding the monitoring work of the temples, prospecting, curatorship and heritage education, 21 pieces were saved and, to promote heritage education in the schools of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo (MG) activities were organized through the Summer Connection project.
Regarding the artistic and integrated assets of temples and their technical reserve, a work plan was created regarding the contract for the restoration of mobile/integrated assets and temples, besides the suitability of the technical reserve: layout, furniture installation, photography studio, woodworking and laboratory equipment. Furthermore, data collection for achieving and screening has begun. There were cadastral, planimetric and altimetric surveys of the chapels of Paracatu (MG) and Gesteira (MG) and their collections. Regarding the monitoring work of the temples, prospecting, curatorship and heritage education, 58 sacred pieces were assessed, which are kept at the technical reserve.

In addition, another 24 pieces were saved by prospection, monitoring and activities inside the churches.
