In February the water monitoring point in the Carmo Creek in Barra Longa (MG), near the confluence with the Piranga River, reached a turbidity below 100 NTU, the recommended value for fresh water according resolution 357, class 2, by the National Council of the Environment (Conama).

The index is a reflection of the tailings containment works and environmental restoration performed by the Renova Foundation, and is an indication that less and less sediments are reaching the reservoirs of the region.

The water monitoring was proposed to evaluate the turbidity of the Doce River and was developed based on discussions by external experts. Since the dam collapse, the turbidity level monitoring has been taking place at various monitoring points, in addition to the monitoring carried out by companies certified by Inmetro, since December 2015 the monitoring has been taking place at 22 points along the Doce River on a daily basis.
