WebGIS Coffey Atlas integrates spatial georeferencing information of the areas impacted by the collapse of the Fundão dam

Between December 12 and 15, representatives of the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) visited the headquarters of the Renova Foundation in Belo Horizonte (MG), where the WebGIS Coffey Atlas was presented, a tool capable of integrating georeferencing information, allowing the monitoring and identification of environmental impacts in the areas affected by the collapse of the Fundão dam.

The meeting resulted in suggestions from the institution for improvements in functionality and content provided by the tool, in order to facilitate and enhance the user experience in data analysis. The idea is that the platform serves two different groups besides the Renova Foundation: the society that can access the Web GIS via the Internet and search for information on the progress of actions managed by the institution, and environmental monitoring bodies, for research and management of the actions, and regulatory agencies such as the Federal Public Prosecutor (MPF) and State Public Prosecutor (MPE).

Through the platform use, multidisciplinary teams work on identifying and quantifying impacts, while others plan, implement and monitor the recovery actions, provided for in the Transaction and Conduct Adjustment Term (TTAC). “The use of Web GIS enhances integration and data sharing. The tool also takes the role of a management instrument, offering an organization of data, according to spatial criteria and time, in a joint manner and focused on the end user, “says Gustavo Ferreira Viana, member of the executive management of environmental projects of the Renova Foundation.

BACKGROUND

Immediately after the collapse of the Fundão dam, Samarco Mineração started using a WebGis platform to provide public databases and the first satellite images and aerial surveys for professionals responsible for emergency needs and mitigation actions. Due to the efficiency of the tool as an integrator of information and source of transparency towards society, in addition to the appraisal by the regulatory bodies, the Renova Foundation has chosen to continue its use.
