The action guarantees the protection of the water sources and favors forest regeneration
The recovery of the Doce River basin has entered an important phase. The first 511 protected springs will be receiving about 300 thousand seedlings for revegetation. This action guarantees the protection of the water sources and favors forest regeneration, offering the soil sufficient conditions to retain rainwater.
The joint initiative by Renova and Instituto Terra that mapped these springs is also supported by the Center of Studies on Ecosystem Restoration (Nere), which offered a training course to the six technicians involved in the work, on July 5, in Aimorés (MG), addressing all the methodologies and special care to be adopted during the seedling planting procedure.

The trained technicians will be multipliers and will guide rural producers who have springs on their farms. The next step will be the production of a manual with guidelines for the owners who have already signed a term of commitment for the protection of these water sources.
“The technical point of view is fundamental. We work with lives. It is impossible to predict and anticipate the behavior of a life. In addition, we deal with several variables that are impossible to control, but we can prepare ourselves to try to minimize the impact and do the best work to ensure the survival and growth of the seedlings. Forest restoration is an activity where we as humans can only help in the process but we will never be the main character” says Felipe Tieppo, a forestry engineer and one of the responsible for the actions related to springs and forest restoration.
