System implemented to serve informal categories was available for 30 months and will be closed by court decision

By court decision, the Simplified Indemnity System will be terminated in stages to ensure that all locations have the same membership period (30 months, or 882 days). In São Mateus (ES), the deadline ends on March 6th.

The processing of requests follows the deadlines determined by the court and, in addition to the stages for which the Renova Foundation is responsible, it also includes the time for the lawyers to send legal documents.

São Mateus was the third location to have access to the Simplified Indemnity System, implemented by the Renova Foundation, by decision of the 4th Federal Court, for indemnification of categories with difficulty in proving damages.

The analyzes of the requirements continue to take place, and the payments of those eligible will be made after approval by Court.

Until December 31, 2022, around 74.9 thousand claimants were paid by the Simplified Indemnity System.

Background

Implemented in August 2020 by the Renova Foundation, by determination of the Judiciary, the Simplified Indemnity System is an alternative for compensation for damages caused by the Fundão dam collapse.

The System makes it possible for washerwomen, artisans, sand fishermen, coachmen, mineral extractors, informal and subsistence fishermen, among other categories with difficulties in proving damages, to be compensated. The System also indemnifies Water Damage and formal categories such as professional fishermen, owners of boats and enterprises such as hotels, inns and restaurants.

The compensation values, defined by the Court, range from R$17,000 to R$567,000, depending on the category of damage.

Reparation

Throughout Espírito Santo and for all affected categories, the amount paid in indemnities and Emergency Financial Aid (AFE) by the Renova Foundation totaled R$6.35 billion, until December 2022.

Considering the compensation and reparation actions in Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais, the value exceeded R$28.7 billion, until December 2022, with R$13.57 billion in indemnities and AFEs destined to more than 409.4 thousand people.
