To ensure the availability of water sources that will feed alternative systems of water supply in the municipalities affected by the water shortage is the focus of the technical study on water security, led by the Renova Foundation, in partnership with external consultants specialized in water resources. One of the objectives of this initiative is to reduce the dependence on the Doce River as a water withdrawal source.
“We verified if the natural supply of water sources has the capacity to meet demand, making sustainable water withdrawal possible, without damage to the natural water resources of the Rio Doce basin”, explains hydrogeological engineer, Matthew Mol, who operates in the Water Supply Systems Improvement Program.

Historical series of rainfall, soil types and infiltration rates are some of the elements of the water cycle that are taken into account. The study will also subsidize the terms of reference for future research and further construction works that will define for example the best collection points. The release of the first results is scheduled for the month of May.
JOINT CONSTRUCTION
The analysis of the capacity of water sources was one of the measures recommended by the Inter-Federative Committee (CIF). The methodologies that will be used for the evaluation, the next working phase, were submitted to the environmental agencies, among them the National Water Agency (ANA), the State Water Management Institute of Minas Gerais (IGAM) and the State Water Resources Agency of Espírito Santo (AGERH), in a meeting held in Belo Horizonte (MG) on February 23.
