Stability analyses indicated structural risks in the barrier between the Pequeno River and the Juparana Lagoon; first stage of decommissioning is underway

The first of the two stages of the decommissioning of the Pequeno River barrier in Linhares has begun. On September 26, construction began of the base for the installation of a cofferdam in the downstream (lower) part of the current barrierThe work is expected to be finalized within 32 days.

The cofferdam is a temporary structure that prevents the contact between the Doce River waters and the Juparana Lagoon. If necessary, the cofferdam will be raised.

Stability analyses indicated structural risks in the barrier between the Pequeno River and the Juparana Lagoon, which was built as an emergency measure shortly after the Fundao dam collapsed, complying with a preliminary decision of 2015. Although temporary, the barrier remained installed, by virtue of a sentence issued by the Linhares Municipal Court Judge, at that time in charge of the judgement of the action.

The Renova Foundation reports that of the 33 families living on Beira-Rio Avenue in March this year, 4 remain in their homes and 29 are staying in temporary housing.

The Linhares barrier is monitored daily, following safety and contingency procedures. In addition to the hydrometric monitoring carried out in the region and in seven points in the Sao Jose River Basin and in the Juparana Lagoon, a daily checklist is used for monitoring the structure of the barrier and additional laser monitoring.

The Renova Foundation’s action to ensure the safety of the barrier and the families in its surroundings are carried out by professionals of the Infrastructure, Engineering, Dialogue, Health, Social Protection, Environment, Safety and Contingency areas.
