Initiative promotes improvements in spaces, expansion of collections and professional training.
Three public libraries in the Steel Valley region were recently restructured as part of the Reading Incentive project, an initiative that aims to improve the structures of these public spaces in 32 municipalities in the Doce River basin.
The municipal libraries Geraldo Godinho, in Ipaba; Fernando Sabino, in Marliéria; and Raquel Pacífico Drumond, in Timóteo, received more than 2,700 items, including books, games, furniture and equipment, in addition to repairs to the structure.
The project had the participation of municipal employees, who drew up restructuring plans for the locations chosen by the city councils. Respecting the ceiling of up to R$210 thousand per library, the plans defined the necessary interventions, divided into four categories: acquisition of books, furniture and equipment, staff training and infrastructure and accessibility.

Project objectives
Launched in 2021, the Reading Incentive Project mobilizes more than 100 municipal employees throughout the entire Doce River basin. To date, 31 of the 32 planned libraries have been revitalized, with the completion of the last library expected in the second half of 2024. The objective is to modernize spaces, train professionals who work in libraries and promote actions to encourage reading.
Revitalizing libraries fosters personal growth for residents and strengthens their sense of community, as the new facilities and resources provide an environment conducive to education and cultural development.
