With the theme Training in Territorial, Cultural and Educational Rights, the capacitation program deals with political, historical, economic, environmental and social issues

In August, the leaders of the Remaining Quilombola Community of Degredo, Linhares district, Espirito Santo, began training to expand their knowledge. With the theme Training in Territorial, Cultural and Educational Rights, the work aims to strengthen the community’s quilombolas through political, historical, economic, environmental and social themes.

The initiative marks the beginning of activities in the field of the Basic Quilombola Environmental Plan (PBAQ) and seeks to prepare current leaders with improved knowledge of their rights. The training also contributes to the emergence of new leaders, reaffirming the importance of the residents’ participation in the reparation actions developed in the community.

Silvani Barbosa, a specialist in the Recovery of Quality of Life of other Peoples and Traditional Communities, emphasizes the importance of the work developed with the quilombolas. “It is important to prepare current and future leaders for a more effective, constant and critical participation within the territory so that reparation actions in the community take place in an integrated manner, with a participative and active movement”, she comments.

Basic Environmental Quilombola Plan

The Quilombola Basic Environmental Plan (QBEP) guides actions to repair and compensate for the impacts caused to the quilombolas in Degredo. The plan was structured into 20 socio-economic and socio-environmental programs, divided into five axes, which unfold into actions to be developed in the community. The Plan is coordinated by the Recovery of Quality of Life of other Peoples and Traditional Communities Program.

To ensure participation and transparency in the reparation process, the preparation of the QBEP included the participation of quilombolas and local associative institutions, such as the Quilombola Commission of Degredo and the Association of Fishermen and Remaining Extractivists of Quilombo do Degredo (Asperqd). Based on the technical needs of repair and the expectations of the population, the programs that currently make up the Basic Environmental Quilombola Plan were created, such as Culture, Identity and Territory, Environment and Fisheries, Health and Education, Ethnodevelopment and Food Safety and Territorial Management and Integrated Processes.
