Emergency Actions

Canal is to drain rainwater accumulated in Juparana lagoon to Doce River

The opening of the canal between the Pequeno River and the Doce River, scheduled for April 4, was temporarily postponed. As a result, traffic on the bridge linking Linhares to Colatina and the Bananal River in Espirito Santo remains open. The project aims to drain rainwater accumulated in the Juparana lagoon.

The engineering project for the opening of the canal fulfilled all the necessary steps for its completion, both technically and service provided to the community. The process is monitored by the competent bodies and meets the requirements for safety, environment and human rights.

The Renova Foundation is in dialogue with the Roads Department (DER) so that the intervention can be made as soon as possible, following all the technical and safety criteria, together with all the parties involved.

The heavy rainfall that hit the Sao Jose River basin and the barrier built in 2015, in compliance with a legal action to prevent the tailings of the Fundao Dam from entering into contact with the waters of the Juparana Lagoon and the Pequeno River, considerably increased the volume of the lagoon, causing flooding.

The canal will be opened alongside the barrier and will drain the accumulated rainwater. It will allow the regularization of the level of the Pequeno River and the Juparana Lagoon over a period of 30 to 45 days.
