Tailings Management

Renova Foundation organized second workshop on the topic, which included the participation of national and international experts, environmental agencies and academics

As part of the process for the preparation of a plan focused on the management of tailings in the Doce River basin, this Thursday (02/23), the Renova Foundation held the second part of a workshop at the Dom Cabral Foundation (FDC), in Nova Lima (MG), called: “Tailings Management: How to deal with the accumulated sediment in the bed of the Doce River”. The Foundation’s initiative brought together representatives of the population, universities and environmental agencies, who worked on the further development of the document.

Roberto Waack, CEO of the institution, stressed that one of the most important aspects of the Foundation is the collective reflection on the problem so that it can be better outlined in detail. He believes that the entity has consolidated itself as an organization dedicated to the development of collective solutions.

During the day, the participants were divided into working groups formed by professionals from diverse disciplines, such as biology, soil studies, chemistry and geology, among others. Marco Aurélio Carbone Carneiro, professor of the Department of Soil Science at the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA), spoke about the exchange of knowledge during the workshop. “I participated in a round-table discussion on the soil science field as a factor in the rehabilitation of the areas affected by the collapse. My expectation is to contribute greatly to the development of this important document, “he says.
