Cultural environmental education program aims to preserve and restore rivers and riparian forests

In March, when the World Water Day is celebrated, the municipality of Mariana held a series of awareness-raising activities with the students of the 4th grade of the Municipal Education Center Padre Avelar (CEMPA) to reflect on water consciousness in a playful and fun way.

The initiative features the support of the Renova Foundation, which presented actions related to the Douradinho Project, a program that carries out cultural activities based on environmental education for the preservation and restoration of rivers and riparian forests.

Douradinho project takes several activities to schools of the impacted communities to encourage children to take good care of nature.

The program ended on March 30, at the Reference Center for Children and Adolescents (CRIA), with a storytelling event of the children’s book “My tin can friend, my river friend”, by Thiago Cascabulho. The entire location received special decoration: theme-based illustrations made by the students themselves on the previous days.

“The Doce Douradinho Project was a hit in 2016 with the participation of more than 3000 students in Governador Valadares. This year we want to increase this number to 12,000 students, now that we have the support of the Renova Foundation”, says Ricardo Abrahão, director of the Institute for the Wellness of the Planet, project leader of the actions in the Doce River region.

Later on this year, the project will come to the towns of Governador Valadares, Ipatinga, Mariana, Rio Doce, Barra Longa, Santa Cruz do Escalvado and Colatina.
