This structure is part of the set of improvement measures of the local public supply system

This Thursday, 10/11, the Renova Foundation officially delivered to the City of Colatina an alternative structure for water withdrawal to supply the city. The new pipeline installed on the Santa Maria River has the capacity to supply around 50% of the demand from the Southern part of Colatina and should operate when the turbidity of the water from Doce River, the largest water source in the city, changes.

Approved in late October, the pipeline went through a phase of tests, with system commissioning and flow measurement. With capacity assessed in 80 liters per second and volume equivalent to 50% of the consumption in the Southern part of Colatina, this structure is ready to work.

The Santa Maria River pipeline is the result of a BRL 3.5-million investment by the Renova Foundation. The water withdrawn will be treated by the local water utility company, SANEAR (Serviço Colatinense de Meio Ambiente e Saneamento Ambiental) before made available to the population.

Still as part of the improvement measures of Colatinas’s public supply system, the Foundation has provided enhancements in infrastructure to optimize the main Water Treatment Plants (ETAs) of the city, by replacing almost 100% of the filter beds and performing preventive maintenance at the decanters and control valves.

This set of initiatives is part of the action plans for the rainy season by the Renova Foundation. The plan consists of preventive and contingency measures implemented to minimize the impacts on society, the environment and the economic activities of the locations impacted by the collapse of the Fundão dam.

The city soccer field affected by the water distribution operations during the time the waste plume passed by last year will still be recovered in 2016, giving back an important recreational and coexisting area of the population to the municipality.

Colatina will have a new pipeline at Pancas River

The Renova Foundation is also building one more pipeline -this time, at the Pancas River-, which will supply ETA 2, in the Northern part of the city. 50% of the work has been completed. It is forecasted to be delivered, in a temporary manner, by late November, enabling water to be carried; and permanently on, January 2017.

As the structure at the Santa Maria River, the Pancas River pipeline was designed for emergency use when Doce River is not able to supply water for some reason.  However, it can be activated at any given time, based on the demands stated by SANEAR.

Adding the two pipelines, plus six artesian wells built in Colatina, it will be possible to meet almost 70% of the city’s demand. The construction work at Pancas River is estimated to cost BRL 4.5 million.

Linhares also has a new pipeline

This week, the Renova Foundation also delivers to the City of Linhares (ES) a new alternative structure for water supply. The pipeline installed in Lagoa Nova is 9-km long, has flow capacity of 200 liters per second and volume equivalent to 50% of the city consumption, decreasing supply dependency from the Pequeno River. Water withdrawn will be treated by SAAE (Autonomous Service of Water and Sewage) before being supplied to the population.

The Renova Foundation

The Renova Foundation is an autonomous and independent institute founded to repair the damage caused by the collapse of the Fundão dam, property of Samarco Mineração S.A., located in Mariana (MG). A private non-profit organization, Renova was created to guarantee transparency, legitimacy and sense of urgency to a complex and long term process. The Foundation was established by means of the Transaction and Conduct Adjustment Term (TTAC), signed between Samarco, its shareholders, the federal government and the state governments of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, as well as several authorities, foundations and institutes (like Ibama, the Chico Mendes Institute, the National Water Agency, the State Forestry Institute, Funai, Governmental Departments of Environment, among others), in March 2016. The Colatina and Linhares pipelines are included in this document and represent the first delivery by the Renova Foundation in Espírito Santo.
