The objective of the panel is to recommend the best strategies for the recovery and conservation of the Doce River basin

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a global institution focused on conservation science, is holding an open call for the selection of independent professionals with experience in several areas to form the Independent Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (ISTAP), which will operate in the Doce River basin. IUCN will work in partnership with the Renova Foundation in the recovery of the region.

The installation of the Doce River Panel – in Brazil called Painel do Rio Doce – aims to recommend the best strategies for recovery and conservation of the Doce River basin after the Fundão dam collapse in Mariana (MG), based on scientific and independent evaluations.

Those interested should have a solid scientific background and knowledge of the region. The Panel is assigned for five years and entries must be made by August 6, 2017.  All information is available at: www.iucn.org/riodocepanel.

DOCE RIVER PANEL

The Doce River Panel will be managed by IUCN, an international institution with experience in the management of panels installed in regions affected by relevant environmental impacts, recognized by the scientific community and coordinated by the Ecuadorian Yolanda Kakabadse.

The actions of the Doce River panel are divided in six thematic axes, considering aspects of terrestrial, marine and riverine life: strategy, toxicology, impacts on ecosystems, ecosystem remediation, water management, waste and tailings, and sustainable economic practices.

The Panel has a strong technical, independent and multidisciplinary character and its specialization is recommendations at different levels and on themes related to the problem. The installation of the Panel is an initiative of the Renova Foundation, due to the complexity, scale and novelty of the environmental tragedy generated by the collapse of the Fundão dam.
